Our Sanctuary Ambassador Project aims to embed the voices of those with lived experiences of forced displacement.

Our primary mission is to enhance people’s understanding of asylum seekers and refugees within our community. By doing so, we aim to increase awareness of the challenges and experiences faced by these individuals.

Our Ambassadors play an active role in community events, educational workshops and outreach activities, working closely with local organizations to foster a more welcoming environment for those seeking refuge. They advocate for positive change, share their stories, and engage in discussions that challenge misconceptions about refugees and asylum seekers. By doing so, they not only influence local communities but also contribute to the development of national and regional sanctuary strategies.

In the first six months, our primary focus was on integrating and embedding their lived experiences into the healthcare system and related fields, ensuring that their voices are heard and valued, through a partnership between our Health and University Streams.

Central to our initial project was the active participation in healthcare research initiatives, where asylum seekers and refugees share their personal experiences. Additionally, we contribute to health science education by incorporating these experiences into lectures and discussions at the UEA. This not only enriches the learning environment but also plays a crucial role in driving meaningful change within the healthcare system, making it more inclusive and responsive to the needs of all individuals.

Beyond our direct involvement in healthcare, we are also engaged in broader platforms to advocate for the inclusion and recognition of asylum seekers and refugees. By participating in these larger discussions and initiatives, we aim to create a more informed and compassionate society that embraces diversity and supports the well-being of everyone.
