Letter to the Editor

A year ago appalling scenes of violence took place in communities across the country, many targeting people seeking sanctuary and other minorities. These riots were a stark reminder of how damaging hostile rhetoric, misinformation and division can be for everyone in our communities.

In recent days we have seen demonstrations taking place outside hotels housing people seeking sanctuary.

We know the vast majority of people recognise that we have far more in common than that which divides us, and that strong community cohesion benefits everyone. As a member of the city of sanctuary movement, we are keen to listen to all members of the community to understand concerns and work together to find solutions.

We are proud that so many people in Norfolk stood, and continue to stand, against division and in solidarity with those who have been forced to flee their homes and are seeking sanctuary in our communities. There are a rapidly growing number of schools, universities, theatres, community groups, faith groups, and many others showing their commitment to welcome by becoming part of the City of Sanctuary network. This June 250,000 people took part in Refugee Week Norwich events.

To find out how you can get involved in working together to ensure that everyone living in our communities is safe and welcome, please visit norwich.cityofsanctuary.org

We submitted this letter to the EDP, in response to the protest held demonstrators, many from the Far Right, in Norwich at the weekend.
