Schools of Sanctuary is a nationwide initiative to celebrate the good practice of schools who welcome asylum seeking and refugee families into their school community and foster a culture of welcome and inclusion for all.
A School of Sanctuary is a school that helps its pupils, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and extends a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the community. It is a school that is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for everyone and especially for those who have been forced to flee their homeland.
Twelve schools in Norfolk have already achieved School of Sanctuary status and we have more than 60 schools actively involved in the local network. We hope that you will join us in building a culture of welcome in our communities!

“The Schools of Sanctuary programme presents schools with a valuable opportunity to coordinate work that further supports pupil wellbeing, broadening efforts to develop important interpersonal skills with their pupils such as empathy, respect and compassion. The Schools of Sanctuary programme builds on and contributes to fundamental core work of schools including British Values, SMSC and PSHE.”
Josie Rayner-Wells, National PSHE/RSE Adviser & Foundation Governor, Taverham Junior School
